Other Site Characteristics

The site is a large forest-lake-bog complex on the boundary with Lithuania in the River Kotra basin. Forest vegetation prevail within the territory (about 80%), most of which is presented by pine and spruce subtaiga forests. There are bog massifs of all three types: lowland – mainly in the river valleys, transition and raised, occupy about 15% of the territory. There are about 10 lakes in the territory with the largest Beloye Lake of the area of 5.3 km. There are also numerous dune complexes within the territory. Natural or slightly transformed territories occupy over 70% of the total area.

4.2 Quality and importance

Over 760 species of vascular plants grow within the territory, about 200 species of vertebrate animals inhabit the territory. At least 25 species of plants and animals has national or international nature protection status. The following species nest here: Aquila pomarina, Crex crex, Grus grus, Bubo bubo, Glaucidium passerinum, Aegolius funereus, Caprimulgus europaeus, Lullula arborea, Ficedula parva and a number of other species. The common species for the territory are Castor fiber, Lutra lutra. Here Cypripedium calceol, Pulsatilla patens grow. In the territory of the reserve there is one of the biggest populations of Bison bonasus in Belarus. The territory is important for conservation of such habitats as: C1.4 G3.B, G3.А, G3.D, G1.A1, etc.
