Other Site Characteristics

Largest remaining tract of near natural to natural riverine and floodplain forest in Central Europe, on both sides of a 40 km stretch of undammed Danube.

4.2 Quality and importance

Species-richests area known, with a total of 217 vertebrate species present (41 mammals, 109 breeding birds, 8 reptiles, 47 fishes). In spite of regulatory work dating back to 19th century with high water protection dam towards the plain Marchfeld to the north, partial regulation or cutting off of minor arms and meanders retained much of the original dynamics of sedimentation and erosion and for this reason largely intact zonation of riverine to floodplain successory stages as well as rich assortment of additional extrazonal habtats/communities from eutrophic oxbows to dry Crataegus-Savanna ("Heißländ") on elevated gravel platforms above highwater.
