Other Site Characteristics

The qualtiy of the site lies on the importance for riverrhine and wetland species.

4.2 Quality and importance

The connection with one of the last free flowing stretches (second one east of Vienna) of river danube an Austria (Wachau) and the high importance for a number of species protected by council directives and national law are reasons for designation.Fish species listed in sectin 3.3 with motivation "D" are the rheophilic species (Barbus barbus; Chondrostroma nasus) which migrate upstream for spawning in several thousand individuals. Thymallus is a typical species of designated river stretches which ist very sensitive.
