Other Site Characteristics

Das Gebiet zählt zu den südlichsten Ausläufern des östlichen Grazer Berglandes, welches einen Teil des steirischen Randgebirges darstellt.Direkt oder nur in sehr geringer Entfernung schließen an das Gebiet folgende naturräumliche Landschaften an: Im Osten das dem Alpenvorland zugehörige oststeirische Riedelland, im Südosten das Grazer Feld mit dem Stadtgebiet von Graz und im Südwesten das westliche Grazer Bergland.Geologisch zählt das Gebiet zum Grazer Paläozoikum, es stehen überwiegend Schichten der Dolomitsandstein-Folge an.Die dominierenden Bodentypen sind: Protorendsina, Rendsina und Kalkbraunerde.Der Großteil des Gebietes wird von xerothermen Vegetationskomplexen gebildet, die von Quercus pubescens dominiert werden, diese sind von Buchenwäldern des Cephalanthero-Fagion umgeben.

4.2 Quality and importance

Das Gebiet zeichnet sich durch folgende geomorphologische und geländeklimatische Besonderheiten aus: Exposition Süd bis Südwest, Inklination 25 -40° (Felswände bis 90°).Die dadurch entstehenden besonderen geländeklimatischen Bedingungen ermöglichen das extrazonale Vorkommen von xerothermer Vegetation.Die Lage am Rand der Zentralalpen bewirkt das Vorkommen einer Reihe von dealpinen Arten.
