Other Site Characteristics

Das Engtal der Donau zwischen Passau und Linz, auch Oberösterreichischer Donaudurchbruch genannt, zeichnet sich durch landschaftlichen Reiz und in weiten Teilen naturnahe Vegetation aus. Prägend sind die Felsrippen, -bänder und -burgen. Hier gedeihen z.B. der Schwarzwerdende Geißklee, Elsbeere, Färber- und Deutscher Ginster sowie die in Oberösterreich auf klimatisch begünstigte Standorte beschränkte Traubeneiche. Eine Besonderheit sind die in den Hang eingestreuten unbewaldeten Blockhalden. Aufgrund der tiefen Spalten und Klüfte findet keine Bodenbildung statt. Die Donaueinhänge werden immer wieder von tief eingeschnittenen Seitentälern und Schluchten unterbrochen, in denen mächtige Exemplare von Bergahorn, Esche, Berg- und Flatterulme sowie reichlich Totholz einen urwaldartigen Eindruck vermitteln.Das wärmebegünstigte Donautal beherbergt bedeutende Vorkommen von Smaragdeidechsen und Äskulapnatter. Überregional bedeutend ist das höchstwahrscheinlich autochthone Vorkommen des Sterlet.

4.2 Quality and importance

Wertbestimmende Merkmale sind die in naturnahem Zustand erhaltenen und großflächig ausgebildeten Schlucht- und Hangmischwälder, die sich je nach Exposition sowohl in der trockenen als auch der feuchten Ausprägung entwickelt haben. Silikatschutthalden besitzen hier eine sehr gute Ausprägung, auch die weiteren Felslebensräume sind in dieser großflächigen Ausbildung und ihrem guten Zustand herausragend. Für die Mehrzahl der vorhandenen Fischarten ist das Gebiet das bedeutendste in Oberösterreich.
