Other Site Characteristics

Das Natura 2000-Gebiet stellt aufgrund seiner weitgehenden Ursprünglichkeit und der seltenen Vielfalt an charakteristischen Verwitterungserscheinungen die bedeutendste Karstlandschaft Vorarlbergs dar. Zu beobachten sind Karren in unerschöpflicher Formenfülle, Naturschächte, Dolinen, Klüfte und Höhlen. In Karrenrissen und Löchern befindet sich eine farbenprächtige Alpenpflanzenwelt in grellem Kontrast zum grau-weißen Schrattenkalk. Das Gebiet liegt in der geologischen Zone des Helvetikum. Hartgesteine bildet der Schrattenkalk und Weichgesteine die Drusbergmergel. Aus geologisch-morphologischer Sicht ist das Natura 2000-Gebiet aufgrund seiner unnachahmlicher Formenvielfalt die wertvollste Karstlandschaft Vorarlbergs mit Bedeutung weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus.

Im Hinblick auf die Erhaltungsziele der Richtlinie ist jedoch das Vorkommen der Kalkschutthalden der collinen bis montanen Stufe Mitteleuropas (8160) prioritär anzusehen.
