Other Site Characteristics

Le site est caratérisé par son massif de feuillus et ses zones de transition en lisière. La présence de milieux secs et humides, à la fois boisés et ouverts, donne lieu à une diversité floristique et faunistique importante.

4.2 Quality and importance

La Forêt de Soignes forme un territoire étendu, dépassant les frontières régionales, en contact avec les Régions wallonne et flamande. Avec sa superficie qui dépasse les 4500 ha, c'est le massif de feuillus le plus important de la région limoneuse belge. La forêt séculaire est caractérisé surtout par sa haute futaie de hêtre impressionante, par des bois melangés à riche flore vernale, et de groupements forestiers alluviaux remarquables. La vallée de la Woluwe et les domaines boisés avoisinants constituent une transition importante entre les milieux semi-naturels boisés et ouverts.
