Other Site Characteristics

A historic military defence system around the city of Antwerp with forts of approximately 10 ha in size at regular distances, partially connected through a channel. Tens of kilometers of underground corridors are located underneath the forts and are used as a hibernating spot by large numbers of various bat species.

4.2 Quality and importance

Important habitat for wintering Annex II bat species.
