Other Site Characteristics

Il s'agit d'un site combinant une grande variété de milieux occupant les crêtes et versants à géologie variée de la Vesdre et de ses affluents. Il reprend notamment le plus vaste site calaminaire de Belgique (Fonds de Forêt), produit de l'acitivté industrielle passée.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les zones forestières sont essentiellement constituées de forêts indigènes des métaclimax des hêtraies calcicole, neutrophile et acidophile, mais de petites zones de forêts de ravins apparaissent également sur les sols calcaires plus instables. Ces forêts constituent tout ou une partie de l'habitat d'espèces d'intérêt communautaire comme le pic mar, le lucane et plusieurs espèces de chauves-souris. Les versants sont également occupés par des milieux non forestiers. Il s'agit d'abord de grandes zones de pelouses calaminaires et pseudo-métalophytes, des habitats rares et d'extension limitée en Wallonie. Des landes parsèment elles aussi les versants dans la partie occidentale du site, tandis qu'on retrouve ça et là des fragments de pelouse sur les sols calcaires situés à l'est. Les pelouses et landes contribuent notamment à l'habitat de l'alouette lulu. Le site présente enfin des mares accueillant des populations de triton crêté, quelques affleurements rocheux et une série de grottes favorables à plusieurs espèces de chauves-souris d'intérêt communautaire et au faucon pélerin.
