Other Site Characteristics

Ce site varié comprend des milieux forestiers et des milieux ouverts tantôt sur sols calcaires tantôt sur substrats ardennais. La partie sur calcaire s'étend principalement de Vieuxville à Ferrière. Le périmètre sur sols plus acides est compris entre Ferrières, Ernonheid et Rouge Minière.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les massifs forestiers justifient la désignation du site par leur grande diversité, que ce soit sur roches acides ou calcaires (9110, 9130, 9150, 9160, 9180*, 9190, 91E0*). Parmi les nombreux habitats forestiers visés par la Directive Habitat, deux sont prioritaires : la forêt alluviale et les érablières de ravin. Au bois Lembrée, la succession de stades évolutifs depuis la colonisation de la roche nue siliceuse (grès du Couvinien) jusqu'à la forêt présente un intérêt tout à fait remarquable. Lorcé présente d'exceptionnelles lentilles tourbeuses non dégradées, à basse altitude, et des coupes récentes d'épicéas sur tourbe. S'y observent de petites zones de tourbière haute active (7110*), degradée (7120) et de tourbière de transition (7140). La Cigogne noire est un nicheur régulier dans les massifs forestiers et fréquente les prairies humides et pâtures avoisinantes. La présence du Pic noir est signalée dans des portions de hêtraies, le Pic mar dans les chênaies, alors que la Bondrée apivore préfère les forêts plus mélangées avec sous-étage.
