Le site s'articule le long du cours de la Rur et possède un intérêt paysager incontournable.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le site des Fagnes de la Roer regroupe un ensemble de tourbières (7110*, 7120) et de landes tourbeuses (4010) plus ou moins dégradées, de prairies humides à bistorte, etc., notamment le long de la Vennbahn, mais aussi de hêtraies acidophiles à luzule blanche (9110) riches en bois morts, dans la réserve forestière du Rurbusch, ou encore des prairies maigres de fauche montagnardes (6520) le long de la frontière allemande, à hauteur de la localité de Kalterherberg. Outre la réserve forestière du Rurbusch, il englobe des sites de grand intérêt biologique comme le Rurhof, l'Herzogenvenn, la Bergervenn, la Schwarzes Venn, le Nesselo, qui sont autant de zone d'intérêt exceptionnel tant par les espèces floristiques, entomologiques et ornithologiques inféodées aux milieux ouverts que par les espèces forestières. Les zones ouvertes le long de la Vennbahn accueillent la seconde plus importante population de Tarier des prés de Wallonie, ainsi que la Pie-grièche grise et la Pie-grièche écorcheur.
