Remarquable dynamique du Castor dans les vallées de la Mellier et de la Mandebras, recréant des ensembles de zones humides de grand intérêt biologique.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site ardennais, il reprend la moitié sud de la forêt de Rulles ainsi que les vallées de la Mellier et de la Mandebras, depuis leur source sur le plateau ardennais jusqu'à leur confluence avec la Rulles en Lorraine ; sur le plateau ardennais, le site correspond aux fonds de vallées de la Mellier et du Mandebras, ainsi que de leur affluents, dans un contexte agricole où ces fonds de vallées sont occupés par des prairies de fauche à bistorte, des mégaphorbiaies, des prairies maigres de fauche, des aulnaies alluviales ; localement le site comprend aussi de remarqaubles prairies maigres de fauche, de petites surfaces de prairies du Molinion ainsi que des lambeaux de nardaies ; ces milieux servent de zone de nourrissage à la cigogne noire, d'habitat au cuivré de la bistorte, à la pie-grièche écorcheur et de zone d'hivernage à la bécassine des marais, à la pie-grièche grise ; dans sa partie aval, le site reprend une partie de l'important massif de hêtraie acidophile qui borde la retombée sud de l'Ardenne et abrite des populations de pic mar, de pic noir, de cigogne noire ; localement les versant escarpés des vallées peuvent être occupés par de l'érablière de ravin, les têtes de bassin par de la boulaie tourbeuse ; dans leur partie aval, les vallées de la Mellier et de la Mandebras sont bordées d'importantes surfaces d'aulnaies, de mégaphorbiaies et abritent des populations reproductrices de castor.
