Other Site Characteristics

The total area of the site is around 100 000 ha. A wide circum-denudation plateau between the rivers of Provadiiska reka (middle stream) Devnia, Provadiiska reka (low stream) Goliama Kamchia, Stara reka (feeder of Goliama Kamchia) and Madara (feeder of Provadiiska reka). It is made of chalk – conglomerates, coarse – grained sandstones, limy marls and sandstones and limestone. Provadiiska reka and its tributary Glavnitza divide the plateau in three smaller plateaus Madarsko, Dobrinsko (high 320 m.) and Roiaksko (389 m). The plateau decreases its highness from northwest to southeast. The southern slopes are slant while the northern and the western are steep even vertical at places. At the Northern and Southern slopes of the plateau in the conglomerates that are stable of the erosion there are developed structured steps and cornices. The plateau is deeply cut by the Provadiiski Gorge, on the slopes of which there are landslides and alluvium cones. There is widely developed Karst with karsts springs and caves. The rocks have very suitable niches for nesting of many birds. To the south of the site there is a big reservoir - Tsonevo. From the plateau take their sources the river Glavnitza and its tributaries as well as small tributaries of Provadiiska River and Goliama Kamchia. The soils are mainly black earth (including leached soils) and grey forest soils. The vegetation is made of Turkey and Hungarian oak and east hornbean forests and bushes and kseroterm grasslands from the step type. Great part of the plateau is taken by agricultural lands.

4.2 Quality and importance

High quality. Rich bird species biodiversity. Very important place for N.percnopterus and many other birds of prey. The numerous caves, niches and fissures are very important roosting habitats for bats. On the territory of Provadiisko – Roiaksko Plateau 100% of the local population of Achillea leptophylla in Bulgarian is found as well as 30 % of the population of Jurinea ledebourii.
