Other Site Characteristics

The site represents limestone and marl rock basis. Two thirds of the river's lenght runs through open areas, while the rest runs through forest semi-alpine and mountainous areas. The river is characterized by a great denivelation and a fast current. In its upper part the river-bed is rocky and narrow. The area around the river after Zlataritsa is more flat, and the forests are less then this part before Zlataritsa

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is an important bio-corridor among the mountainous parts of the Elenski Central Balkan Mountains and the sites of Yovkovci Reservoir and the Stara reka and Yantra rivers. There is a list of more important taxons of macro-zoobenthal organisms available. It is a result of the monitoring implemented by RIEW - Veliko Turnovo in the period 2000-2005. In table "Ecological Information - Other Important species", the species justified by 'A-National' are not necessarily included in the National Red Data Book, because its last edition is too old (1985), not up-dated and has no legislative value. The species indicated by 'A-National' are the protected flora and fauna species, included in the Bulgarian Biodiversity Act, and therefore this motivation is given highest priority. The region around the Zlataritsa , Gorsko Novo selo vill and Djulinista vill. is more polluted.
