Other Site Characteristics

The SCI includes most of Sushtinska Sredna Gora Mountain, the eastern part of Ihtimanska Sredna Gora Mountain and the rocky gorge of river Topolnitza, south of Petrich village, linking the two. Old beech and oak forest have been conserved here, that are large homogeneous area far from human settlements. This is the most appropriate territory for expansion of the Bear distribution.

4.2 Quality and importance

The pSCI protects a territory inhabited constantly by several bears, but also has great potential for reintroduction of the species in a large area. This will increase considerably the Balkan Range population and will give good opportunities for genetic exchange with the other Bulgarian population - the Rilo-Rhodopean. The site is one of the few remaining viable populations of land tortoises in the mountains surrounding upper Trakia plane. The site protects important habitats for Spermophilus citellus.
