4.1 General site character

The site is part of the watershed of river Ezousa, one of the main running water bodies of Cyprus. The climate of the site is dry temperate with a rainfall of 400-600 mm and mean minimum temperature of the coldest month 3-6 °C. The geologocal subsrate varies from alluviums and colluviums to Pachna, Mamonia and Lefkara formations.Vegetation: Hydrophilous riparian vegetation flanks the river all along. The main habitat types are oriental plane forests with Platanus orientalis and Alnus orientalis (92C0), galleries of Salix alba (92A0), Nerium oleander and Tamarix smyrnensis galleries (92D0) and reed beds (CY02). The vegetation of intermittently flowing Mediterranean rivers (3290) is composed by Lythrum junceum, Inula viscosa, Veronica anagallis-aquatica etc. A significant part of the area is covered by pine forest (Pinus brutia, 9540). A larger part is covered by sclerophyllous Quercus coccifera scrub used for grazing (CY01). Pistacia terebinthus, Crataegus azarolus, Styrax officinalis and also Ptilostemon chamaepeuce also participate in this habitat. The phryganic vegetation (5420) that develops in the area is characterised by the species Sarcopoterium spinosum, Thymus capitatus etc.Several open sites are covered by xerophytic grasses and annuals (6220), mainly Hyparrhenia hirta with other Gramineae and a few orchids.Finally, part of the area is occupied by vineyards and citrus orchards.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site Koilada Ezousas consists a rare in Cyprus riverine landscape which combines a variety of riparian and fresh water aquatic habitats and plays an important role in the conservation of the flora and fauna of the island. A large number of birds live in the area and the site is an important habitat for the birds of prey. EZOUSSA river valley supports 3-4 breeding pairs of Buteo rufinus, 1 breeding pair of Hieraaetus fasciatus and 1 pair of Falco peregrinus. The extensive, steep cliffs host hundreds of Corvus monedula and Columba livia, eagles and peregrines favorite prey. Coracias garullus breed in high densities on the site, due to the several good nesting sites offered here along with cultivated areas that can be used for forage. Other Annex I species breeding on the site are Sylvia melanothorax, Ixobrychus minutus, Burchinus oedicnemus. The area is also designated as important bird migrating corridor by the Game Fund.This is one of the best Francolinus francolinus habitats island wide and one of the species’ strongholds. Columba palumbus also breed in high densities in the extensive Alnus orientalis galleries along the river bottom.
