Flache Brackwasserlagune, deren seicht ansteigende Uferbereiche einen der größten Salzwiesenkomplexe der s.-h. Ostseeküste repräsentieren. Salzwasserkontakt, schmale Verbindung zur Lübecker Bucht.

4.2 Quality and importance

Das Vorkommen zahlreicher gefährdeter Tier- und Pflanzenarten unterstreicht die Bedeutung des Gebietes. Wichtiger Zufluss aus dem Hügelland ist die Kremper Au, gleichzeitig bedeutendste Verbundachse ins Binnenland. Kleiner Bereich ist das geologisch schützenswerte Objekt 'Lachsbach, Schellholz-Neustadt'
