Naturnahe Waldbestände (Buchenwälder und Ahorn-Eschen-Schluchtwälder) mit artenreichen Mittelgebirgswiesen.

4.2 Quality and importance

Großflächige,gut ausgeprägte u.vielgestaltige Buchenwaldkomplexe.Lebensraum d. Großen Mausohr. Brutgebiet u. Nahrungsgebiet sowie z.T.Jahreslebensraum typ.Vogelarten d.Wälder,Gebüsche u.d.angrenzenden Offenlandes.1 nicht tour.erschl.Höhle. Zahlreiche mittelalterliche u.neuzeitliche Bergbauanl. belegen eine Nutzung des Gebietes als Bergbaurevier, das unter dem Schutz der Stolberger Burg stand. Harzgeröder Olisthostrom m. Grauwacken, Tonschiefer, Kalkstein (Silur-Unterkarbon), Rotliegenvulkanite und Stieger Schichten der Ostharzdecke.
