Bei dem Gebiet handelt es sich um ein ausgedehntes Waldgebiet des südlichen Rothaarkammes mit den Quellen, Quellzuflüssen und Oberläufen der Eder, Lahn, Sieg und Benfe. Ergänzung zu 3.3.: Im Gebiet gibt es bedeutsame Vorkommen folgender Vogelarten: Bekassine, Braunkehlchen, Eisvogel, Grauspecht, Neuntöter, Raubwürger, Raufußkauz, Rotmilan, Schwarzspecht, Schwarzstorch, Wachtelkönig, Wiesenpieper
