Großflächige, z.T. naturnahe, urwaldartige Bergmisch- und Fichtenwälder, Großer und Kleiner Arbersee, Subalpine Gipfelregion mit Bergkiefern-Gebüsch, Borstgrasrasen und Silikat-Fels- und Schutt-Lebensraumtypen, Refugium für Eiszeitrelikte.

4.2 Quality and importance

Vorkommen von arktisch-alpinen Moosen und Flechten von nationaler Bedeutung, Schwerpunkt für den Schutz von Silikatquellmoorkomplexen in Bayern, einzige größere Vorkommen von subalpinen Latschengebüschen in Nord- und Ostbayern. 'Schwimmende Inseln', entstanden durch Aufstau der Seen für die Holztrift Gr. und Kl. Arbersee als Karseen Zeugen der letzten Eiszeit, Rieslochfall bei Bodenmais (Wasserfall), Gipfel des Gr. Arbers als Felsburg, Geotop 276R014, Geotop 276R007
