Other Site Characteristics

Habitatområdet omfatter et stort inddæmmet fladvandsområde med strandeng, strandoverdrev og rørsump. Mange steder findes opvækst af buskads og skove. Området er gennemskåret af kanaler og omfatter flere søer. Ved Amagers sydspids indgår et strandengsområde og det omkringliggende fladvand.

4.2 Quality and importance

H: Området er en botanisk lokalitet af stor vigtighed. Området tjener i vid udstrækning som refugium for arter, som ellers for manges vedkommende ville være helt eller delvis forsvundet fra denne del af landet. Dette skyldes at denne lokalitet efterhånden er et af de eneste strandengs og overdrevsområder af større udstrækning i Københavns- og Køge Bugt-området. Der er registreret godt 450 højere plantearter i området. Af særlig interesse er de tre rødlistearter: Blå Iris (Iris spúria ), Øresundshønsetarm (Cerastium diffusum ssp. subterandum) og Brændskærm (Cnidium dúbium). Derudover er der sjældne arter som feks Eng-Skær (silybum tinctória), Eng-Ensian (Gentianélla uliginósa), Alm. Månerude (Botrýchium lunaria), Kost- og Strandnellike (Diánthus arméria L. og Diánthus supérbus L.), Seline (Selinum carvifólia L.), og orkidéarterne Bakkegøgelilje (Plantanthera bifolia ssp. bifolia), Kødfarvet Gøgeurt (Dactylorhiza incarnata ssp. incarnata), Majgøgeurt (Dactylorhiza majalis) og Tyndakset Gøgeurt (Orchis máscula L.), samt Bitter Mælkeurt (Polýgala amarélla). Habitatområdet har derudover international betydning som fuglelokalitet og er udpeget af Miljøministeriet som et nationalt, biologisk interesseområde. EF: Fuglebeskyttelsesområdet Vestamager og omliggende havområde er en lokalitet af stor vigtighed. Området er et af Østdanmarks vigtigste vådområder med meget store bestande af ynglende og rastende andefugle og vadefugle. Derudover er lokaliteten et særdeles godt og vigtigt rasteområde for rovfugle. Området er et af Danmarks vigtigste lokaliteter for overvintrende Lille Skallesluger (Mergus albellus). Derudover yngler der i området tiltider en række rødliste arter heriblandt Atlingand (Anas querquedula), Sydlig Almindelig Ryle (Calsris alpina schinzii), Plettet Rørvagtel (Porzana porzana) samt Pungmejse (Remiz pendulinus).
