Other Site Characteristics

På landbrugsarealerne omkring søerne findes kun få levende hegn. Udpegningsområdet ligger i småkuperet morænelandskab. Området består af de tre lavvandede søer Søndersø, Hejrede Sø og Røgbølle Sø med omgivelser. Søerne omgives af rørsumpe, kreaturgræssede enge, samt skov. Søndersø og Hejrede Sø er næringsbelastede, kun Røgbølle Sø har god vandkvalitet med udbredt bundvegetation. Søerne med omgivelser er fredede. NB: At this site the habitat type 6210 is to be considered as non-priority.

4.2 Quality and importance

H: Maribosøerne er beliggende i et småbakket morænelandskab (indtil 20 meters højde) med gode og lerede jorder. Maribosøerne er det største ferskvandsområde på Lolland omgivet af større løvskove, moser, enge samt større landbrugsarealer. Morænesøerne har stærkt bugtede kystlinier, fremspringende næs og talrige øer, der danner et landskab, der er helt forskelligt fra det omgivende flade landbrugsland. Søerne er Østdanmarks vigtigste indlandsfuglelokalitet, er af international betydning for flere vandfuglearter og huser regelmæssigt mere end 20.000 vandfugle. Skovene er domineret af bøg med indslag af eg og med forekomst af en række mere ualmindelige danske løvtræsarter som lind og avnbøg. Efter danske forhold udgør sumpskov en forholdsvis stor andel af skovarealet. Desuden rummer skovene en række værdifulde plante- og insektsamfund. EF: Maribosøerne er af stor ornotologisk betydning på grund af store ynglebestande af Rørdrum (Botaurus stellaris), Havørn (Haliaetus albicilla) og Fjordterne (Sterna hirundo). Maribosøerne er desuden af international betydning for flere vandfuglearter og huser regelmæssigt mere end 20.000 vandfugle.
