Other Site Characteristics

Se trata de una laguna litoral -o Albufera- de casi 2000 Has. de superficie, rodeada por campos de arroz. También incluye la restinga litoral ocupada por dunas y pinadas en su parte no urbanizada.

4.2 Quality and importance

Es la zona húmeda más importante de la Comunidad Valenciana y una de las principales de España. Contiene más del 2% del hábitat "lagunas" y más del 15% del "aguas oligo-mesotróficas calcáreas". Es importante para la conservación de numerosas aves acuáticas y contiene varios endemismos vegetales .En algunos de los "ullals" ó manantiales que incluye existen poblaciones de samaruc (Valencia hispanica). Destacan las colonias mixtas de ardeidas (con más de 4000 parejas) y larolimicolas (3000 parejas). También es importante la invernada de anátidas que algunos años supera los 70000 ejemplares.Por todo ello ha sido incluida en el listado del Convenio Internacional de Ramsar.
