Other Site Characteristics

Antigua albufera colmatada, hoy día constituye uno de los marjales más interesantes de la costa valenciana. Está delimitado, por el norte y por el sur por dos ríos, "Bullent" y "Molinell",que contribuyen a su alimentación hídrica, y surcado por numerosos canales y acequias.

4.2 Quality and importance

El marjal de Pego y Oliva destaca por la cantidad y calidad de agua dulce de que se surte, lo que resulta excepcional en la costa mediterránea española. Estas características dan lugar a la existencia en la zona de hábitats extraordinariamente raros y para cuyo mantenimiento es imprescindible la conservación de la zona. Su interés para las aves motivo su inclusión en el Convenio Internacional de Ramsar. También alberga una de las mejores poblaciones naturales de samaruc. No obstante, y a pesar además de su carácter de espacio natural protegido, recientemente ha sufrido graves alteraciones con el fin de su puesta en cultivo, alteraciones que han afectado al 70 % de la zona húmeda y que han provocado notables descensos en la nidificación de numerosas especies de interés.
