Other Site Characteristics

El lugar está compuesto por un páramo abierto sobre calizas, cubierto de matorral calcícola bajo y abierto, disectado por la incisión del río Gritos que conforma una hoz con numerosos escarpes y proniunciadas laderas cubiertas por matorrales de sabina negra, romerales y lastonares.

4.2 Quality and importance

El páramo de Valera posee una vegetación camefítica calcícola de bajo porte y abierta (Xero-Aphyllanthenion, Salvio lavandulifoliae-Erinaceetum anthyllidis, Lino-Salvietum lavandulifoliae), hábitat idóneo para determinadas especies de aves de hábito estepario, como la alondra de Dupont (Chersophilus duponti), especie para la que se supera el criterio numérico de designación de ZEPA, el alcaraván (Burhinus oedicnemus), bisbita campestre (Anthus campestris), cogujada montesina (Galerida theklae), ortega (Pterocles orientalis) o curruca rabilarga (Sylvia undata). En las laderas abruptas aparecen comunidades de sabina negra (Rhamno lycioidis-Juniperetum phoeniceae), romerales (Cisto clusii-Rosmarinetum) y lastonares (Stipo-Helictotrychetum filifolii, Plomido lychnitidis-Brachipodietum retusi). Los farallones están ocupados por la comunidad Chaenorhino-Sarcocapnetum enneaphyllae. en estos farallones nidifican algunas especies de aves rupícolas como halcón (Falco peregrinus), alimoche (Neophron percnopterus), aguila perdicera (Hieraaetus fasciatus) o chova piquirroja (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), dando un especial carácter a esta pequeña pero valiosa Hoz. El río Gritos posee fragmentos de alamedas (rubio-Populetum albae), encontrándose actualmente muy alterado por la contaminación de sus aguas y la ejecución de dragados y canalizaciones de su cauce.
