Llanuras en la margen derecha del Río Tajo, que se desarrollan sobre materiales arenosos de cuencas sedimentarias y depósitos fluviales con algunos afloramientos graníticos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Zona ocupada por extensas superficies de pastizales xerofíticos anuales y baldíos, con una elevada riqueza y diversidad de aves esteparias, destacando las poblaciones de Aguilucho cenizo, Avutarda, Sisón, Ortega, Alcaraván y Cernícalo primilla. Se conservan formaciones riparias (fresnedas, saucedas, juncales, etc) en los arroyos que surcan la zona y destaca la abundancia de charcas que sustentan hábitats de vegetación anfibia de lagunazos temporales, de gran interés. Existen enclaves de dehesas, generalmente sobre lomas suaves, con un buen grado de conservación. El censo de 120 parejas de Cernícalo primilla se refiere a 15 parejas en el interior de la ZEPA más 105 fuera, en cascos urbanos de Oropesa (80 parejas) y Calzada de Oropesa (15 parejas). Los territorios de alimentación están dentro de la ZEPA aunque aniden fuera de ella.

Este lugar se propone, por un lado, como LIC, atendiendo a los hábitats prioritarios del Anexo I de la Directiva 92/43/CEE que sustenta y, por otro lado, como ZEPA en atención a las importantes poblaciones de diversas especies de aves esteparias incluidas en el Anexo I de la Directiva 79/409/CEE que alberga.El número de 120 parejas de cernícalo primilla incluye a 15 parejas que anidan dentro del territorio de la ZEPA y 105 que se localizan en los núcleos urbanos de Oropesa y Calzada de Oropesa pero que tienen sus territorios de alimentación dentro de la Zepa.

En diversos polígonos catastrales del término municipal de Calera y Chozas se aplica un Programa de Ayudas a la adopción de prácticas agrícolas compatibles con la conservación del hábitat para las aves esteparias en la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla-La Mancha (Orden de la Consejería de Agricultura y Medio Ambiente de 24 de marzo de 1995).
