Other Site Characteristics

Este área abarca buena parte de la península que forma el extremo NE de Mallorca. Es una zona montañosa formada por rocas calcáreas del Secundario muy deformadas que sufrieron varios cabalgamientos durante la orogenia alpina que formaron importantes relieves orientados en dirección EN. No existen grandes acantilados en la costa, a excepción del Cap des Freus, pero sí en el interior. El clima es mediterráneo mesotérmico, seco-subhúmedo con una pluviosidad anual de 700 mm. La zona costera se encuentra fuertemente influida por los vientos de tramuntana y levante, que con su aporte salino condicionan la vegetación. Existen varias playas arenosas no afectadas por la construcción, con formaciones dunares importantes. El atractivo paisajístico del lugar es muy elevado, al tratarse de una zona muy abruptas con grandes variaciones en la pendientes, con una costa sinuosa y no urbanizada con pocos puntos de acceso para el público, lo que sin duda ha contribuido a su conservación.

4.2 Quality and importance

En el área se encuentran varios hábitats incluidos en el anexo I de la Directiva 92/43/CEE, todos ellos con una representatividad y un estado de conservación global excelente. Dos especies de plantas prioritarias del Anexo II de la Directiva Hábitats crecen en la zona. Además nidifican numerosas especies de aves citadas en el Anexo I de la de la Directiva 79/409/CEE, que ya supusieron la declaración como ZEPA de los dos cabos que forman los extremos de la península.

En esta se incluyen dos Reservas naturales, Cap Ferrutx y Cap des Freu (Decreto 127/2001, de 9 de noviembre, BOCAIB núm. 140, 22/11/2001) La parte terrestre de esta zona coincide casi totalmente con un Area Natural de Especial Interés según la Ley 1/1991 del Parlament Balear

Decreto 30/2007, de 30 de marzo, por el cual se aprueba el Plan de Gestión del Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC) Muntanyes d'Artà (ES0000227), Gran parte del área será gestionada como Parque Natural en un futuro próximo. Está elaborándose un PORN.
