Other Site Characteristics

Área de S de Menorca que incluye los barrancos de Binigaus, Trebaluger y Algendar, formados al reosionarse la plataforma de sedimentos calizos del Mioceno que forma la mitad S de Menorca. En los barrancos se encuentran prácticamente los únicos acantilados del interior de la isla, por lo que tienen una gran importancia para algunas especies de aves y plantas rupícolas.

4.2 Quality and importance

Además de las aves nidificantes, que justifican su declaración como ZEPA, en la zona crecen Teucrium asiaticum, Hypericum balericum, Paeonia cambesedessi, Cymbalaria aequitriloba, Viola stolonifera y otras especies endémicas y microareales, algunas de las cuales están incluidas en el Anexo II de la Directiva 92/43/CEE.

5.3 Site designation (optional)

Área Natural de Especial Interés, según la Ley 1/1991, de 30 de enero, de Espacios Naturales y de Régimen Urbanístico de las Áreas de Especial Protección de las Islas Baleares. El Plan Territorial Insular de Menorca (aprobado en mayo de 2003) consolida la figura de ANEI, definiendo además Áreas de Alto Nivel de Protección (encinares, bosques de acebuche, zonas de protección costera, maquias de aladierno, zonas húmedas, islotes, sistemas dunares, acantilados, vegetación rupícola litoral, reservas marinas y barrancos. Toda la isla de Menorca está declarada Reserva de la Biosfera por el Programa MaB de la UNESCO desde 1993.
