Other Site Characteristics

Espacio marino que se extiende a lo largo de unos 30 km de franja marina litoral. Presenta una anchura variable desde la línea de costa, llegando a alcanzar más de 7 km en algunos puntos . El límite occidental se sitúa a la altura de la ría de Ea. Los aportes hídricos de la ría de Mundaka-Guernica, controlados principalmente por la dinámica mareal y en menor medida por los aportes fluviales, generan zonas de elevada productividad a nivel local. Los fondos son predominantemente rocosos, con algunas zonas arenosas puntuales.

4.2 Quality and importance

Extensión marina a diferentes colonias de cría de paíño europeo (Hydrobates pelagicus) y cormorán moñudo (Phalacrocorax aristotelis aristotelis) establecidas a lo largo de todo el sector costero e islotes. El espacio marino se caracteriza por sus aguas poco profundas, en el contexto del cantábrico oriental, donde el cormorán moñudo consigue explotar sus recursos tróficos a mayor distancia de la costa. La zona es importante también para una gran diversidad de aves marinas migratorias, entre las que destacan, por su importancia, la pardela balear (Puffinus puffinus mauretanicus) y el alcatraz atlántico (Morus bassanus).
