Espacio marino que ocupa buena parte de la extensa plataforma continental del golfo de Cádiz, desde la frontera con Portugal hasta las aguas frente a la desembocadura del Guadalquivir, sin llegar a tocar tierra. Su límite sureste se encuentra a escasos 15 km de la ciudad de Cádiz. El golfo de Cádiz presenta un régimen oceanográfico complejo, sujeto a importantes cambios estacionales. Esta área coincide con una zona de elevada productividad, debida principalmente a los ricos aportes fluviales del río Guadalquivir, y en menor medida del Guadiana, Tinto y Odiel. Los fondos son mayoritariamente arenosos en las zonas menos profundas y de fangos finos en las de mayor profundidad, como consecuencia del aporte de sedimentos fluviales. En toda la zona de plataforma, y gracias a la elevada productividad, existen zonas muy importantes para el desarrollo larvario de ciertas especies de interés pesquero. Estas incluyen diversas especies demersales, pero también pequeños peces pelágicos, que constituyen presas especialmente importantes para las aves marinas.

4.2 Quality and importance

Destaca especialmente por las importantes concentraciones de pardela balear (Puffinus mauretanicus) y de paíño europeo (Hydrobates pelagicus) en otoño, así como de alcatraz atlántico (Morus bassanus) en otoño-invierno y el págalo grande (Stercorarius skua). La gaviota de Audouin (Larus audouinii) también es frecuente en la zona, particularmente en los meses de invierno, donde destaca su actividad nocturna.
