4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Espacio marino pelágico, situado frente al cabo de La Nao, en el canal de Ibiza. Incluye el borde de plataforma continental y talud que se extiende desde Cullera hasta Alicante. Transcurre paralelo a la línea de costa y su punto más cercano a tierra, por el oeste, es el cabo de la Nao, a 3 km de distancia. Su profundidad varía entre los 40 y los 650 m. Existe una zona de confluencia de aguas de origen atlántico, que fluyen desde el sur, y de origen mediterráneo desde el norte. Esto provoca la formación de importantes frentes oceánicos y zonas de afloramiento, especialmente en el borde de plataforma-talud continental. La elevada productividad derivada de estos fenómenos, junto con la gran extensión de la plataforma continental, hace que sea una zona adecuada para el desove de pequeños peces pelágicos y una zona rica en organismos planctónicos. Los fondos están dominados por fangos y por algunas rocas y arenales dispersos.

4.2 Quality and importance

Esta zona marina representa una de las principales áreas de alimentación para la pardela balear (Puffinus mauretanicus) durante la época reproductora. Asimismo, es la segunda zona de alimentación en importancia para el paíño europeo (Hydrobates pelagicus) durante la reproducción, en el contexto del Mediterráneo español. La gaviota de Audouin (Larus audouinii) también aparece en número significativo en época de cría, al igual que la pardela cenicienta (Calonectris diomedea). La pardela balear es igualmente común en la zona durante los meses de otoño e invierno.
