Other Site Characteristics

Espacio marino, situado al noroeste de la isla de Mallorca, que comprende las aguas marinas que bordean el litoral, la isla de Dragonera y los islotes de Malgrats y Conills, así como otros más pequeños como el de Pantaleu o el del Toro. La costa es muy recortada y está dominada por acantilados de poca altura, aunque también existen algunas playas y bahías. El área se encuentra bajo la influencia directa de la corriente superficial que fluye en dirección noreste por las costas occidentales de Baleares. Consecuentemente, se encuentra en una zona de frentes, con una productividad relativamente alta en el contexto balear. La práctica totalidad del fondo está recubierto de arenas. En las zonas más abrigadas y someras aparecen praderas de posidonia (Posidonia oceanica), como por ejemplo en el canal entre Dragonera y Mallorca.

4.2 Quality and importance

Espacio marino en el entorno de una de las mayores poblaciones reproductoras de pardela balear (Puffinus mauretanicus), a nivel global(cerca del 25%), repartida en tres núcleos del noroeste de Mallorca: Sa Cella, Dragonera y Malgrats-Conills. La pardela cenicienta (Calonectris diomedea) y la gaviota de Audouin (Larus audouinii) también presentan colonias de importancia en la zona. Además, la pardela cenicienta encuentra en la zona una importante zona de alimentación en el contexto balear.
