Los roques y las bajas presentes son el resultado de la erosión del acantilado costero próximo, conocido con el nombre de riscos de Tibajate, situados en el norte de la isla de El Hierro. La punta de Arelmo es el punto más saliente de dicho acantilado y se encuentra frente a los Roques de Salmor, donde destacan por su tamaño el roque Chico y el roque Grande. Al igual que ocurre en el resto de la isla, los fondos son rocosos y de origen volcánico. Su situación en la vertiente norte hace que estén a merced de los vientos alisios dominantes y otras inclemencias meteorológicas. A ello hay que unir su destacada e imponente orografía, lo que dificulta en gran medida su adecuada prospección.

4.2 Quality and importance

Extensión marina circundante a un conjunto de roques que cuenta con importantes colonias de aves marinas, entre las que destacan el petrel de Bulwer (Bulweria bulwerii), la pardela chica (Puffinus assimilis), el paíño europeo (Hydrobates pelagicus) y el paíño de Madeira (Oceanodroma castro).
