4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Espacio marino que rodea la mitad septentrional de la isla de La Palma. Se extiende desde el norte de Santa Cruz de La Palma por el sector oriental de la isla, hasta pocos kilómetros al norte del pueblo de Tijarafe, en el sector occidental. En toda esta franja predominan los acantilados de origen basáltico de gran altura (media de 200 metros), surcados por grandes barrancos en cuyas desembocaduras se han formado pequeñas playas o calas. También son abundantes los roques marinos, entre los que destacan por su tamaño los de Santo Domingo, Las Tabaibas y El Guincho en Garafía, y Roque Negro en San Andrés y Sauces. Al pie de los acantilados y en sus repisas, la acumulación de derrubios por efecto de la erosión da refugio alternativo a las aves marinas, al tiempo que lo convierten en un lugar de difícil acceso. El relieve submarino se caracteriza por fondos volcánicos basálticos muy irregulares. Su orientación hace que las condiciones meteorológicas en el mar sean adversas la mayor parte del año, debido al efecto de los vientos dominantes en el cuadrante norte y este.

4.2 Quality and importance

Importante extensión marina definida para las colonias de petrel de Bulwer (Bulweria bulwerii), pardela cenicienta (Calonectris diomedea) y pardela chica (Puffinus assimilis) del norte de la isla de La Palma. Estas especies nidifican en los acantilados y en los numerosos roques marinos existentes en la zona. Además, gran parte de la población reproductora canaria de pardela pichoneta (Puffinus puffinus) utiliza estas aguas como lugar de descanso y congregación, ya que cría en barrancos y paredes escarpadas del interior de la isla, varios kilómetros tierra adentro.
