Other Site Characteristics

El río Ayuda discurre en sentido este-oeste a través de la zona meridional del territorio de Álava, aunque la mayor parte de su recorrido corresponde al enclave del Condado de Treviño (Castilla y León, provincia de Burgos). El entorno del río está dominado por los usos agrícolas. Los núcleos de población son de pequeña entidad, si bien se han desarrollado en los últimos años nuevas urbanizaciones. El río Ayuda es afluente del Zadorra por su margen izquierda, desembocando en las proximidades de la localidad de Lacorzanilla. Las riberas del Ayuda conservan un aceptable grado de naturalidad en cuanto a la situación del bosque ripario. El tramo bajo del Ayuda está clasificado como "zona de pesca libre sin muerte" y "coto de pesca de cangrejo señal", de acuerdo con la normativa anual de la Diputación Foral de Álava.

4.2 Quality and importance

El principal elemento natural que avala la propuesta es que las riberas del Ayuda se incluyen en el área de distribución del visón europeo (Mustela lutreola). Se trata de un carnívoro semiacuático globalmente amenazado, entre cuyas poblaciones más importantes a nivel mundial figuran las correspondientes al Ayuda y al cauce inmediato del Ebro. También desde el Ebro se constata la dispersión de ejemplares de nutria (Lutra lutra). Desde el punto de vista ecológico general, el estado de conservación de las vegetación ripícola contribuye a la diversificiación del paisaje en comarcas agrícolas como las que riega el río.
