Other Site Characteristics
Este enclave está constituido por cuatro pequeños humedales situados en las proximidades de la villa de Laguardia (Álava). Tres de ellos (Carralogroño, Carravalseca y Musco) constituyen las lagunas endorreicas mesosalinas más septentrionales de la Unión Europea. El cuarto humedal (Prao de la Paul) es un represamiento realizado sobre una antigua zona húmeda drenada.Se trata de los únicos humedales de cierta entidad existentes en la comarca de la Rioja Alavesa, siendo imprescindibles para el mantenimiento de especies y comunidades de elevada singularidad.
Laguardia, con cerca de 1.500 habitantes, es una de las poblaciones más importantes de la comarca administrativa conocida como Rioja Alavesa. Esta es la más meridional de las que forman la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco. El paisaje agrícola está constituido por cultivos mediterráneos, entre los que destaca la vid, cuya omnipresencia caracteriza la comarca. La topografía es llana, pero aparecen numerosas depresiones y cerros.
El terreno de el Prao de la Paul constituía originalmente una zona encharcada, probablemente temporal, que hace varios siglos fue drenada y convertida en un pastizal húmedo. En el año 1990 se levantó un pequeño dique en el canal central de drenaje. Además se realizó una toma en el arroyo de San Ginés, que contribuye a mantener el agua durante todo el año en el vaso. El proyecto fue concebido como una balsa con destino al riego, si bien no ha sido utilizada hasta la fecha actual. |
4.2 Quality and importance
En este lugar se encuentran las lagunas mesosalinas endorreicas más septentrionales de Europa, únicas representaciones de este tipo de ambientes en la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco. Ocupan varias depresiones cerradas, alimentadas por aportes de lluvia y escorrentía. Durante el estiaje la lámina de agua desaparece y el lecho es ocupado por una costra salina. En las lagunas se encuentran flora halófila muy especializada y de requerimientos ambientales estrictos, propia de medios salobres y escasa en el resto de la Comunidad Autónoma.
Son utilizadas por un importante número de especies de aves acuáticas como lugar de descanso durante la migración e invernada. La evolución experimentada por la balsa de El Prao, en cuanto a las poblaciones de peces y cangrejos introducidos, y la cercanía de colonias de aves acuáticas en La Rioja, ha permitido en los últimos años el asentamiento de núcleos reproductores de martinete (Nyctycorax nyctycorax) y garcilla bueyera (Bubulcus ibis), únicos existentes en la Comunidad, así como de otras especies de ardeidas. |
