Other Site Characteristics

El río Arakil, de caudal modesto, discurre a través del extremo nororiental del Territorio Histórico de Álava, donde también se le conoce como Araia o Albeniz. Nace en la vertiente meridional de la sierra de Urkilla, que junto con las de Elgea y Altzania forma parte de la divisoria de aguas cántabro-mediterránea y cierra, por el norte, la cuenca visual de la Llanada Alavesa oriental. Existe una línea divisoria aparentemente sutil y topográficamente poco marcada entre los núcleos de Galarreta, Mezkia y Bikuña, de forma hacia el este las aguas fluyen al Ebro a través del Zadorra, y hacia el oeste lo hacen a través del Arakil. La cuenca es relativamente estrecha, ya que queda oprimida entre los rebordes montañosos de Altzania al norte y de Entzia al sur. Atraviesa un entorno donde predominan los usos agrícolas con pequeños núcleos rurales, si bien la cercanía del corredor de comunicaciones de la autovía N-I y del ferrocarril Madrid-Irún ha favorecido la creación y ampliación de polígonos industriales, en los últimos años.

4.2 Quality and importance

El río y riberas del Arakil ha sido seleccionado a partir de la información existente sobre el área de distribución del visón europeo (Mustela lutreola). Esta especie figura entre las de protección prioritaria a escala continental, dada la amenaza de desaparición que pende tanto sobre el núcleo oriental europeo como sobre el occidental. Se considera que la conectividad entre las subpoblaciones de la especie identificadas en la cuenca del Ebro es una estrategia importante para su conservación. En todo caso, el papel de los cauces fluviales como corredores ecológicos y elementos de diversificación paisajística en comarcas con usos mayoritarios agrícolas o industriales es destacable.
