Other Site Characteristics

El espacio debe su nombre al monte Pagoeta, de 678 m de altitud, que forma parte de la cadena de montañas de la costa de Gipuzkoa. En su ladera norte que vierte las aguas al río Oria, se extiende el barrio de Laurgain y, mirando al sur,las pendientes del barrio de Altzola descienden hacia el barranco del río Altzolaras, tributario del Urola. Los bosques y prados de sus laderas son testimonio vivo del paisaje rural de los valles atlánticos vascos. Además, guardan en sus lomas y barrancos excelentes muestras del legado cultural: caseríos, ferrerías, molinos, etc. A todo ello se une la existencia de un jardín botánico, en el que se muestran cerca de 3.000 especies de plantas de todo el mundo, entre ellas las pertenecientes a la flora protegida del País Vasco. Las grandes masas de arbolado (robledales y hayedos) dominan el paisaje en las laderas septentrionales del monte Pagoeta. En la ladera sur, en cambio, predominan los ambientes abiertos de prados y matorrales que descienden hacia el estrecho barranco de Altzolaras en el que los roquedos calizos se entremezclan con un vistoso bosque mixto de caducifolias.

4.2 Quality and importance

Se trata un espacio que aglutina campiñas cantábricas y bosques, en un macizo próximo a la costa. En este espacio existe una importante variedad de hábitats, zonas forestales, prados, pequeños núcleos rurales y bosques naturales. La gestión y mayoritaria propiedad pública de este espacio permite que se conserven paisajes que el proceso de desarrollo económico ha borrado de otras zonas de campiña atlántica. Las campiñas ejercen un favorable papel para la avifauna migratoria e invernante, al proporcionar recursos tróficos favorables gracias a la suavidad climática invernal.
