Other Site Characteristics

Este pequeño enclave se sitúa en el tramo central de la costa vizcaína, en el municipio de Gorliz. Comprende una serie de dunas cuaternarias rodeadas de terrenos arenosos del Neógeno, junto a la playa de la localidad. El espacio seleccionado incluye la porción menos alterada del campo dunar, limitada por las carreteras de acceso a la propia playa.

4.2 Quality and importance

Se trata del sistema dunar de la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco en el que se ha catalogado un mayor número de especies de plantas vasculares, 177 en total. Aparentemente, este hecho se debe a su extensión superficial y a la diversidad de comunidades vegetales con las que contacta e intercambia plantas: acantilados, bosquetes de pino marítimo (Pinus pinaster), prados y matorrales. Así, 22 de estas plantas son especies propias de arenales (psammófilas: Ammophila arenaria, Koeleria glauca, Festuca juncifolia, Pancratium maritimun, Calystegia soldanella, Carex arenaria, Cutandia maritima, Aetheorhiza bulbosa, Linaria supina, Phleum arenarium, Ononis repens, Asperula occidentalis, Parapholis incurva y otras) o de ambientes costeros. Este sistema dunar se considera uno de los más importantes sistemas de este tipo en la costa vasca, y uno de los de mayor potencialidad para la restauración, ya que existen zonas ahora degradadaspero que no han sido aun ocupadas por el desarrollo urbanístico. En conjunto, el Avance del Plan territorial sectorial del litoral de la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco califica el ámbito del espacio como de "alto o muy alto valor para la conservación".
