Other Site Characteristics

Sector comprendido entre los Llanos del Hostipal - Benasque - Sahún - Castejón de Sos modelado en un valle glacial en artesa con un complejo sistema hidrológico que integra numerosos valles laterales colgados. Régimen hidrológico de carácter nivo-pluvial tremendamente alterado por los embalses de regulación y aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico (Eriste, Sahún y Castejón de Sos). En el tramo alto encontramos masas de Abies alba, Betula celtiberica. En el medio son frecuentes las masas mixtas de Fraxinus excelsior, Betula celtiberica, Corylus avellana mezclados con prados de siega. En el tramo más meridional son más abundantes los quejigares de Quercus del grupo faginea también mezclados con prados de diente y cultivos. Son frecuentes las acumulaciones de gravas y cantos no permanentes frecuentemente semicolonizadas por Salix ealeagnos. La intensa actividad turística de este valle ligada a la estación invernal de Cerler y a los deportes de aventura amenaza la estabilidad de los sistemas y comunidades naturales.

En este curso fluvial destacan algunas comunidades de ribera maduras que albergan una gran riqueza y variedad florística. La calidad de las aguas favorece la presencia de numerosas especies faunísticas ligadas a cursos fluviales de montaña.
