Other Site Characteristics

Espacio singular y de gran complejidad geológico-estructural, ubicado en las sierras exteriores orientales del Prepirineo Oscense. Los relieves estructurales dominantes que rodean a las lagunas (fuera del LIC), se alinean de NW a SE y están formados por calizas del Cretácico superior-Eoceno. Entre esta alineación, que se prolonga hacia la Sierra del Montsec, aflora el Trias Keuper de forma diapírica en numerosos lugares (Naval, Ubiergo, Estada, Estopiñan, etc), lo que determina la formación de una serie de depresiones erosivas margo-arcillosas de origen kárstico sobre las rocas evaporíticas del Triásico, como las Lagunas de Estaña. El paisaje vegetal está dominado por un mosaico de cultivos de secano con encinares, coscojares y enebrales de Juniperus oxicedrus, que en las zonas con mejores suelos son sustituidos por quejigales bien conservados. Las zonas más degradadas por el pastoreo están formadas por matorrales mixtos con Buxus sempervirens, Juniperus oxycedrus, y Rosmarinus officinalis. El complejo de lagunas está formado por tres cubetas con un nivel de encharcamiento variable y una cuarta ya colmatada.

Complejo kárstico prepirenaico de gran singularidad en el contexto peninsular, con un elevado interés geomorfológico y con una buena representación de los bosques de quercineas y los matorrales mediterráneos.
