Other Site Characteristics

Espacio de gran interés y extensión que se ciñe a las sierras de Alcubierre y a su piedemonte más próximo y que eleva en la zonas más altas a 700metros. Todo el conjunto se corresponde con plataformas tabulares ligeramente basculadas hacia el norte y generadas a expensas de procesos de erosión diferencial que dejan un techo resistente de naturaleza carbonatada, y taludes en la franja meridional y occidental de naturaleza más deleznable (yesos, arcillas), profundamente incididas por la densa red de barrancos. Las comunidades vegetales dominantes están constituidas por formaciones arbóreas de Pinus halepensis y sabinares abiertos mixtos, entremezclados con cultivos extensivos de secano. En las zonas más degradadas, sobre todo en taludes, aparecen matorrales termófilos mediterráneos presididos por Quercus coccifera, Rosmarinus officinalis, tomillares y aliagares. En los fondos de algunos barrancos encontramos formaciones puramente mediterráneas de Pistacia terebintus. Destacar las comunidades gipsícolas ligadas a afloramientos yesíferos, dominadas por Ononis tridentata, Gypsophila hispanica, Heliantemun squamatum, etc. Los usos ganaderos y agrícolas tradicionales son las principales actividades en este sector.

Zona de especial relevancia por su estratégica situación en el valle del Ebro y por presentar importantes masas boscosas abiertas de Pinus halepensis con sabinar y formaciones de matorral esclerófilo mediterráeo.
