Other Site Characteristics

Pequeño saladar ubicado en las proximidades del núcleo de Azaila que consta de 56 hectáreas, algunas de las cuales corresponden a terrenos agrícolas. En torno al núcleo central de la salada dispuesto en la orientación de los vientos dominantes NW-SE, encontramos una extensa superficie de matorral claro gipsófilo de menos de 0,5 metros. La característica fundamental de este foco endorreico, es que en su fondo de depresión existen acumulaciones de agua de lluvia en forma de laguna con una superficie inundable de escasa extensión y de poca profundidad. Es una laguna temporal y de carácter salino, en la cual, durante los periodos secos, se depositan costras salinas en el fondo de la depresión. En torno al núcleo central salino se disponen en orlas concéntricas diferentes comunidades halófilas de gran interés, en primer término vegetación anual pionera con Salicornia entre otras especies, que dan paso a pastizales salinos y matorrales halófilos mediterráneos.
