Other Site Characteristics

Este espacio se ubica en la parte septentrional de la Sierra de Palomera que alcanza en este sector una altura en torno a los 1300m. Los materiales aflorantes pertenecen al Mesozoico y Paleógeno. Se reconoce la superficie de erosión fundamental, de edad finiterciaria, sobre la que destacan relieves residuales; en esta superficie se localizan pequeños campos de dolinas de orígen kárstico. La parte meridional de este espacio está atravesado por una fosa tectónica con orientación NW-SE cubierta por materiales paleógenos en clara disposición estructural. Las formaciones vegetales predominantes están constituidas por un encinar de porte arborescente resultado de una intensa sobreexplotación, para el aprovechamiento maderero, carbonero, pastoreo, etc. En la parte septentrional domina el Quejigal denso, en ocasiones en formaciones mixtas con Quercus rotundifolia. En la parte meridional encontramos sabinares de Juniperus thurifera bien conservados y mezclados en algunos sectores con encinas. El resto del espacio está cubierto por matorral mixto calcícola fundamentalmente tomillares mixtos, cesped xerófilo mixtos y Juniperus communis hemisphaerica disperso, entre otras especies y algunos campos de cultivo. Las actividades agropecuarias son el principal aprovechamiento del monte, sobre todo el pastoreo de los matorrales.

4.2 Quality and importance

Extensas superficies de bosques de quercíneas (encinares y quejigales) bien conservadas en algunos sectores pero con evidencias de usos pasados. Destacan las formaciones de Sabinar (Juniperus thurifera) que en ocasiones se mezcla con encinas.
