Other Site Characteristics

Esta unidad se ubica en el tramo medio del río Mijares hasta su entrada en la Comunidad de Castellón. El río circula en dirección W-E y atraviesa las unidades carbonatadas mesozoicas de la Ibérica turolense sobre las que se encaja creando cortados de origen fluviokárstico, transversales a las estructuras. El régimen hidrológico es de tipo pluvial mediterráeo presentando máximos caudales en el mes de marzo y mínimos en el estío y registrando importantes pérdidas por evapotranspiración que se traducen en coeficientes de escorrentía bajos. Destaca la buena conservación de sus márgenes con formaciones de ribera maduras dominadas por Populus nigra, Populus alba, Salix alba y formaciones arbustivas del género Salix. La vegetación natural se combina con zonas de cultivos próximas al cauce. Destacar las comunidades casmofíticas ligadas a los paredones calcáreos. En las laderas próximas dominan los pinares de Pinus halepensis y Pinus nigra, en ocasiones repoblados, junto a amplios sectores en los que aparecen formaciones arbustivas submediterráneas con predominio de Quercus coccifera, Juniperus phoenicea y en algunos sectores rodales de Quercus rotundifolia.

4.2 Quality and importance

Destacan las formaciones de ribera maduras en algunos sectores con una gran diversidad especifica y que actúan como refugio de la flora y fauna. En los paredones calcáreos encontramos importantes comunidades casmofíticas. Este espacio actúa como corredor biológico entre la Ibérica Turolense y los montes de Castellón
