Other Site Characteristics

Espacio de gran extensión, ubicado en el sector oriental de la unidad morfoestructural de las Sierras de Albarracín dentro de la Rama Castellana de la Cordillera Ibérica, que sobrepasa en las zonas más elevadas los 1500m. Predominan los afloramientos jurásicos de calizas formando relieves monoclinales y plataformas en materiales carbonatados formando extensos aplanamientos arrasados correspondientes a la superficie de erosión fundamental de edad finiterciaria. La red fluvial aprovecha las discontinuidades entre los estratos individualizando los relieves estructurales y erosionando los depósitos de ladera. En las planicies calcáreas se desarrollan formas kársticas de gran interés geomorfológico principalmente dolinas. El paisaje vegetal está dominado por el sabinar de Juniperus thurifera de porte arbóreo y bien conservado en muchos sectores. También aparecen formaciones mixtas abiertas con Juniperus thurifera y Quercus rotundifolia, que en las zonas más húmedas es sustituido por Quercus faginea. Las zonas más degradadas o con un pastoreo más intensivo domina el sabinar mixto de porte arbustivo con Juniperus thurifera disperso, Juniperus comunis hepisphaerica, Juniperus sabina, aliagares y tomillares. El mosaico se completa con algunos campos de cultivo dispersos y algunas repoblaciones de Pinus nigra en las partes bajas y frecuentemente sobre terrazas. El pastoreo es la principal actividad de este sector, que aprovecha los sabinares adehesados, los matorrales y los pastizales secos.

Espacio de gran interés por la extensión y buen estado de conservación de sabinares de Juniperus thurifera, que aparece frecuentemente mezclado con Quercus rotundifolia.
