Other Site Characteristics

Espacio ubicado en el sector Central de la Depresión del Ebro, limitado en la margen derecha por el río Jalón. En esta unidad encontramos retazos de relieves estructurales y formas de acumulación correspondientes al sector central de la cubeta del Ebro. La parte sur se corresponde con plataformas tabulares, groseramente horizontales, generadas a expensas de procesos de erosión diferencial, que dejan un techo resistente de naturaleza carbonatada y un sustrato más deleznable de naturaleza arcillosa o margosa. Rodeando la plataforma aparecen rocas evaporíticas terciarias sobre las que se desarrolla una extensa red dentrítica de valles de fondo planos con acumulaciones de limos yesíferos holocenos. La zona más septentrional a menor altura está cubierta por retazos de glacis y terrazas pleistocenas del río Jalón. Las formaciones vegetales están fuertemente condicionadas por la naturaleza del sustrato. En la parte más meridional coincidiendo con la plataforma calcárea domina el matorral esclerófilo mediterráneo. En sectores más degradados por el pastoreo y sobre todo en los segmentos que ponen en contacto los fondos de las vales y las lomas yesíferas aparecen pastizales con predominio de Brachypodium ramosum y Lygeum spartum, y puntualmente tamarizales dispuestos a lo largo de los barrancos. En el resto del espacio dominan las comunidades gipsófilas de gran interés dominadas por Ononis tridentata, Gypsophila hispanica, Heliantemun squamatum, etc. Puntualmente ligado a la presencia de sales aparecen matorrales halófilos y halo-nitrófilos de gran interés. Los principales usos son los agrícolas y ganaderos.

Zona de gran interés por la presencia de matorrales gipsófilos y halófilos y estepas con pastizales secos de Brachypodium ramosum que albergan una importante comunidad de aves esteparias.
