Other Site Characteristics

Tramo fluvial del Ebro desde la localidad de Alforque hasta Escatrón. En este sector el río circula por materiales arcillosos coronados por calizas, encajándose y formando meandros fijos de acusada curvatura. Por ello la llanura de inundación está muy reducida y tiene escasas posibilidades de evolución. Hay que destacar las densas y ricas formaciones de soto en las islas y mejanas como la isla de Alforque o las islas de la Mejana de Cinco Olivas, Alborje y del monasterio de Rueda. En algunos tramos abunda Arundo donax. Resaltar la presencia en algunos tramos de canales trenzados de Margaritifera auricularia y pez fraile (Salaria fluviatilis) ambas especies en peligro de extinción. El espacio queda limitado por profundos cortados a ambas orillas del Ebro que albergan una interesante fauna rupícola.

4.2 Quality and importance

Importante ecosistema fluvial por su estructura lineal que junto a la vegetación silvestre mantiene la función de corredor verde. Las formaciones vegetales actúan como refugio para la fauna silvestre destacando por su apoyo trófico y cobijo a una gran variedad de aves en el proceso migratorio. Destacan los sotos densos y muy dinámicos formados en las islas y mejanas y con una gran variedad de especies florísticas y faunísticas asociadas. Este sector tiene además un grán interés paisajístico.
