Other Site Characteristics

Sierra divisoria entre los ríos Piedra y Jiloca que cierra el campo de Used por el norte, justo antes del Embalse de la Tranquera. El espacio se ubica dentro de los macizos mesozoicos de la Ibérica Zaragozana, aunque incluye una pequeña parte al norte de relieves paleozoicos formados por materiales de naturaleza metamórfica. La sierra presenta una orientación NW-SE con una clara vergencia hacia el Noreste. Presenta una altitud en torno a los 900-1000 metros y está formada por materiales carbonatados, que en las zonas más elevadas coinciden con superficies de erosión en calizas. Las formaciones vegetales predominantes se componen por un mosaico de matorrales y herbazales en diferentes grados de madurez y cubrimiento, destacando las formaciones de Juniperus phoenicea y Rosmarinus officinalis. Junto a sectores con predominio de tomillar mixto y Brachypodium retosum, encontramos zonas con Cervo-timo-aliagar. En la parte suroriental junto a los matorrales encontramos formaciones arbóreas de Quercus rotundifolia. El pastoreo es la actividad más destacada siendo importante en todo el sector y condicionando la progresión del matorral. Las repoblaciones forestales de Pinus pinaster poco integradas en el medio dominan algunos sectores de la parte norte, siendo de Pinus halepensis en la parte suroriental.
