Other Site Characteristics

El espacio se enmarca dentro de las sierras mesozoicas de naturaleza carbonatada de la Ibérica Zaragozana, con superficies de erosión en calizas que se sitúan en torno a los 1100-1200m de altitud y que se prolongan por la provincia de Guadalajara. El río Piedra desde su nacimiento conforma un estrecho valle encajado formando meandros excavados en la roca caliza de gran interés geomorfológico. Encontramos interesantes comunidades rupícolas asociadas a los roquedos del cañón fluvio-kárstico. Las formaciones vegetales predominantes están formadas por bosques maduros de quercineas, principalmente Quercus rotundifolia y Quercus faginea, este último situado sobretodo en las zonas más húmedas y siguiendo el cauce del río. En otros sectores aparecen formaciones arbustivas con Juniperus phoenicea entre otras especies. Las repoblaciones forestales de coníferas sobre todo Pinus nigra ocupan pequeños sectores. Las actividades agropecuarias son los principales usos del espacio, encontrando algunos terrenos de cultivo y zonas con evidencias de pastoreo.

4.2 Quality and importance

Espacio de gran interés geomorfológico y biogeográfico por la presencia de un cañón fluviokárstico excavado por el río Piedra entre relieves calcáreos, formando paredones verticales con una flora rupícola asociada. Hay que destacar las formaciones boscosas de quejigos y encinares combinados con matorrales mediterráneos entre los que destaca la presencia de Juniperus phoenicea.
